PyTorch Conference 2026: Google and Meta Open-Source TorchTPU for Native PyTorch on TPUs

Google and Meta open-sourced TorchTPU at PyTorch Conference 2026, a native PyTorch backend for TPUs that replaces the lazy-tensor PyTorch/XLA bridge. Porting a model requires only changing `model.to("cuda")` to `model.to("tpu")`, with Hugging Face, vLLM, and SGLang working out of the box. Google demonstrated near-linear scaling past 8,000 TPU v7x chips (Qwen3 235B at 28% MFU) and released a TPU agent suite for automated performance tuning, as Meta plans to move large-scale LLM workloads onto TPUs.

Why it matters

For a solutions architect focused on AI/ML infrastructure, TorchTPU eliminates the friction of porting PyTorch models to TPUs, enabling seamless scaling of LLM workloads on Google Cloud with minimal code changes and access to agent-driven optimization.

OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?

OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?

Let’s look at a quick timeline of the major LLM model announcements from both OpenAI and Anthropic over the past few months. All pricing numbers provided are input MTok / output MTok / cache read MTok . June 26, 2026 # OpenAI announced GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna. Sol is the direct successor to GPT 5.5 at the same price of $5 / $30 / $0.50 , while Luna is a small model specifically designed for cheaper use cases at $1 / $6 / $0.10 . They also announced a Terra model that’s in between those two models, but few cared about it.

A 10-year-old CNN outperforms frontier LLMs for skin cancer diagnosis

This is a melanoma. Figure 1. Invasive melanoma on the ear, under 0.8 mm thick. Both LLMs called it a seborrhoeic keratosis and said it could be discharged. The CNN called it a melanoma. Clinical photograph on the left, dermoscopic image on the right. Images: MILK10k , MILK study team, CC BY-NC. I showed these two images - a clinical photograph and a dermoscopic (skin microscope) image - to GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1, two of the most capable AI models available in October 2026. Both said it was a seborrhoeic keratosis, a harmless warty growth, and that the patient could be discharged. I…

Google ML Drift Accelerates On-Device AI Inference Across Diverse GPUs

Google has released ML Drift, an open-source, cross-platform GPU compute engine designed for on-device AI and machine learning inference. Licensed under Apache 2.0, it abstracts the complexities of different GPU hardware and low-level APIs, supporting OpenGL ES, OpenCL, Metal, and WebGPU. By Sergio De Simone

Valkey 9.2's new rdbcompression lz4 setting cuts a 1M-row RDB from 178MB to 35MB

Valkey 9.2.0-rc1's whole-stream LZ4 RDB compression shrank a million-row JSON dataset from about 178MB to 35MB, an 80% cut the old per-string LZF default barely touches. It does nothing for replication unless a second, undocumented-in-the-release-notes setting is also flipped.

The State of Context Engineering

Oct 24, 2026 CONTEXT ENGINEERING PRESENTATION The State of Context Engineering The Job is Knowing When to Be Deterministic & When to Be Probabilistic This week, I gave a short talk at AGNTCon titled, “Context Fails & Fixes,” that functioned as a sort of “State of Context Engineering.” How did context engineering emerge, where has it gone, and where might it go in the future? As model makers target new capabilities, they inadvertently create challenges we, as users and harness builders, must overcome. Below are the slides and a lightly edited transcript. As always,

Is Kubernetes ready for AI agents?

Is Kubernetes ready for AI agents?

Kubernetes, built on deterministic software assumptions, struggles with unpredictable AI agents that reason, call tools, and act autonomously. A CNCF survey shows two-thirds of organizations running AI inference workloads on Kubernetes, but security gaps persist—recent incidents where agents escaped sandboxes and launched cyberattacks highlight the need for explicit permissioning frameworks and VM-level isolation. The CNCF is addressing these gaps, but commercial distributions already offer production-ready sandboxing capabilities.
